A Theatre Near You (Movies through English)

Welcome to A Theatre Near You – our regular look at the English in popular and future movies. Today, we’re looking at movie trailers, just like the clips you see before you watch a full movie in the cinema (which in the USA is called the “theatre”).

Every trailer tells a story. And every story has four parts:

1. What happened?
2. Who is there?
3. When did it take place?
4. Where did it take place?

Each of these three trailers has the answers to these questions, mostly through spoken English. By listening carefully, you could build the story yourself with the facts (below).

1. 12 Years A Slave
2. Anchorman 2
3. Noah

Carefully choose which option applies to each video. Simply copy the questions into a document and write/type the number of the movie trailer beside each one.
But be careful! Under each of the 4 categories, there is one option which you don’t hear at all – and for each movie, there are two answers to the question WHAT?

WHERE?
  • New York City;
  • heaven;
  • Canada;
  • an enormous boat;

WHO?

  • many desperate people;
  • a politician;
  • a sexist, racist man who used to be famous;
  • a man who used to have a much better life

WHEN?

  • a time of evil ,
  • a dozen years,
  • 1896,
  • [not given]

WHAT?
  • a kidnapping;
  • a new job;
  • a new romance;
  • sporting equipment and dangerous insects;
  • a natural disaster;
  • a murder;
  • a deception;
  • a global threat

You'll find the answers in the comments below (24 hours after this post). If you're confident you have the answers correct, how well do you think you could describe it (speaking or writing)?
